Each print used a painting of women done by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). The women of these paintings were often subjected to the artist’s male gaze and his problematic desires enhanced by colonial rhetoric. By “re-imaging” these women, I reflected on the overall form and lines of the body rather than sexuality or voyeurism. The image begins with a “blind” drawing of the women (drawing their shape without looking at looking at the paper). I then use this simple outline to create the new figure. Through this process the focus is on shape and form rather than the subjects sexuality.
